@buymycatart First off, rest assured we have all been frustrated trying to get back to a point in the square program - it's normal.
One important part is to know what program or operating system you are using. When you say "I could figure out how to get to the starting screen at home" are you using the same device you are using while meeting your client at the office? If you are using an iPad or laptop the square system is different from your iPhone or other devices.
Are you just unable to locate the App? Depending on the device you can search for the Square App looking for the familiar white square. Once located you will activate the program and log in. This should boot your system to the home screen. Should it boot you to an unfamiliar screen without logging in? You can exit out and restart the App. If that does not work. Delete the app and reinstall starting new at square one.
If it is the same devise you are using at home and then at the store? And if it looks different at home vs how it looks at the store? It is most likely because you are not connected to internet while in the field. Go to your settings and allow square to utilize your cellular data. There is also an offline mode you can use should you not have internet access.
Finally, just in case you missed it. I am including a screenshot of the toggle switch between the two systems. (pre-set items vs open charge) if this is the difficulty you are having this is a common mistake we have all made.
