UPC Codes and variable pricing

I am hoping to get some advice or direction on an issue I face with my particular business.  We are a gourmet food store and cheese shop with hundreds of items in our Square item library.   Recently, we added the existing manufacturer UPC codes found on our products to the library along with a hand-held scanner which has really decreased the average checkout times vs the old "hunt & peck" method.  It works great but....

Since we sell cheeses and charcuterie that is cut to order with variable weights, our digital  scale prints out UPC codes and can create a random weight price embedded UPC per transaction that can be read in a grocery store setting which will automatically load the price into the register based on the embedded info.  I cannot seem to find a way to get the Square setup to do this.  If I assign a static UPC code to a cheese, like cheddar, and leave the price blank in the Square system, it will pull that cheese up in the database and prompt us to manually enter the item cost, hit enter, then move on to the next item.  This slows things down which is what we wanted to get away from since we have a pretty large volume.  Anyone know how I can fix this?  I should add that we are also using the new Square Register system in all our locations now.

Hi @OWAT, welcome to the seller community and I apologize for the delayed response.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with your barcode scanner, inventory, and scale needs. At this time, the ability to integrate the label and scanner as you've described isn't available. What you're doing by manually entering in the price for your cheese items is the best way to keep track of your sales.

We are tracking this request and a few sellers brought up a similar issue in another thread, if you'd like to have a look: Barcode Scanner to Read SKU and Price for Weight-Based Items.

I'll be sure to surface your post with our Register team and point out that this improvement is vital for streamlining your checkouts. Please do keep in touch for updates and don't hesitate to let us know if anything else comes up.
