Setting up per-unit x time priced services?

Hello all, I need to punch a stamp in my newbie card.

We are setting up Square online to support the services our shop performs.  We dry, plane, and sand customer-supplied wood.  All of these operations are billed on a multiplier of board feet.  For wood drying we have the following variables -

  • Type - Slab or round
  • Species (walnut, maple, etc)
  • Thickness (1", 1.5", 2", 2.5", etc)
  • Approximate board feet (the sum of all wood in this category measured in cubic feet)

If a customer had different types, species or thicknesses for the same order they would have to "add to cart" multiple times, and that's okay.

The process would go something like -

  1. Customer wants wood finishing services
  2. Customer visits site and submits an order (to hold their place in line), and puts down a 20% deposit
  3. Customer gets estimate sent to them setting expectations on time and other requirements
  4. Customer drops off wood - Customer estimate verified, and estimate may be revised.
  5. Services performed, customer notified by an invoice they can pay online
  6. Customer picks up wood after submitting payment

I created a 'Service' item for wood drying, and attempted to create a variation for just board feet, but could not see how to wire it up.  Is it possible to do what I'm after with Square?

Cheers,

Ty

Hi @CoastalWood! Happy to have you on board in the Seller Community.

It sounds like you're setting everything up correctly as far as listing "wood drying" as a service and then variations for the size. Are you not seeing it show up when you look at your Online site?

Hello Nika, thank you for responding.

I am not seeing the variations appear.  When I preview the listing, I see the picture, description, and red text stating "This store is not yet accepting payments."  Im not wiring up my bank account to take payments until I know Square can support the scenario.

I setup one variation, created a custom attribute for board feet, and selected a unit of 'per item'.  Frankly, Im lost how to properly configure this.

Thanks @CoastalWood.

Make sure that you have your domain set up so that you can preview your listing from your actual website. You should see the option to set it up on the main page of your Online editor. Once your domain is set, you can make it so that you're not currently accepting orders, just in case someone were to come across your site before it's ready.

You'll then see the link to your Online site. You'll want to navigate to your site so you can test it to see if the variations are displaying there.

Let me know what happens after you've gotten this far!
