Item units/variations on different menu items

I am trying to figure out if I can have an item that I use to track inventory, but to have a subset of the various units available via different menu items. And further, to only allow some units to be available online.

For example, I want an inventory item of 'eggs' to track individual egg inventory.

Units for 'eggs' are:

• single - 1 egg
• double - 2 eggs
• triple - 3 eggs
• carton - 12 eggs
• case - 144 eggs

To organize things in a way that makes sense to staff, I'd like to have separate menu items with a subset of the units. For example:

Menu item 'Eggs to Eat' should offer units

• single
• double
• triple

Menu item 'Packaged Eggs' should offer units

• carton
• case

And finally, only the 'Packaged Eggs' units should be available for online purchase.

Is this something Square can handle normally?

Any suggestions on clever ways to achieve this?

I use this to sell 1 Taper, a dozen tappers or a Case of Tapers.   I do not remember if it tracks only by Total Tapers or if it also tracks the quantity of Dozens and the Quantity of cases available.  It only Tracks my Total Tapers so in your case it would show:

• single - 1 egg                    1000     (Total Eggs available)
• double - 2 eggs              2 double   How you pack them
• triple - 3 eggs                 3  triple     How you Pack them
• carton - 12 eggs           12 carton    How you Pack them
• case - 144 eggs           144 case      How you Pack them

I just looked at my inventory to get you an answer

Mine shows

BLK 10" Tapers                            1000

 variation Dozen                           12 pk

 Variation Case                           144 cs

The Pk is my naming a how they come in the  case, and then there are 12 pks / case or 144 Tapers per case for this item.

Now if I sell 4 - 12pks my quantity drops from 1000 to 952 tapers remaining (-48 = 4*12), and the other two variations show no change.

Thanks for responding.

I've got all the units working as you describe.

What I'm trying to do is only show some of the units on a specific menu item, and show the other units on a different menu item.

And only allow certain of the units to display for sale online.

So far, I haven't been able to figure out how to have the units appear on different menu items, nor how to control which items are offered for online sale at the unit level.

You can choose Locations where each item is available for sale if you have locations set up.  I also believe there is a Toggle button to enable / disable the ability to sell the item variation online, but I do not use Square for my Web Host as I had my website before I joined Square.  I just looked at my Variation and under Manage Stock you can choose the Location and under the Details Tab you can choose if available for sale.

So if you Go to your Item - then select the Variation XL for example that is where the Detail and Manage Stock tabs are.

Hi Keith,

I understand how to toggle a variation on and off for online sales, but I am asking about selling at the unit level.

I believe if I switch to using variations rather than units, I will no longer have the common inventory level maintained automatically. That is why I went with units rather than variations for the different selling options.

My pipedream is to have Square maintain the inventory of 'eggs' no matter what units they are sold in, but to be able to have some unit options appear under different menu items, and only a subset of unit options available for online selling.

Your responses are making me believe this is likely not doable with Square.

You can sell Eggs in different amounts and track it from one inventory quantity of eggs.  Each Unit can have a different SKU so if you can have:

Items Eggs

Units

SKU   Single Egg

SKU   Double Egg

SKU    Triple Egg

SKU    Dozen Eggs

SKU    Case Eggs

By doing this your workers could type in Single   and get Single egg   They could also type in egg and get all 5 items to choose from or type in eggs and only get the last two SKU items.  A SKU can be both Numbers or Letters up to I believe 40 Characters in Square.   The Search field on the checkout screen searches Item Name, SKU and GTIN fields for items.  

As for being able to add Eggs to Different Menu Options is probably not an available option for in store sales.  I was trying to figure that out for Candles.... By Color and Scent.   Some people shop here by Scent and some by Color.   I wanted a way to have all my scented in one category and all my Red Candles also listed there, but never found a way to do this with Square for in store sales.  With having barcodes on the items there is no need for the categories or having to look up an item at the POS , which you could do on the larger quantities of eggs for the packaged and Case size sales.  

From what I am gathering is you are like me and want subcategories for the Items.

Main Item Eggs

  Sub Categories

              Eggs to Eat 

              Packaged Eggs

Which is not possible with Square.   There is a request for this feature, but Square keeps saying it is not planned.  The best answer shows how to do it for ONLINE but not for the instore POS systems.
