Customer Identification at register via barcode

I am trying to find a way to offer returning customers an identication card or keychain that has a barcode on it that can be scanned at the beginning of the transaction that will apply their customer account automatically.  I was reading that it can be done via the reference section in the customer information and a QR code.  My problem is my scanner will not read a QR code and don't want to replace it with a $200+ scanner.  Is there a way for this to be done with a 128 code barcode?

At the time this would be a Feature Request for the bar code scanner and your Customer profiles.
