Can I print to a remote printer?

We are a taproom that does not have a kitchen. We are partnering with a local restaurant to serve food in our pub. That being said, my question is, can we enter an order in our POS and have it print a ticket to the restaurant who is also logged in to our POS account? They of couse are not on our internal network. However we would provide them with an ipad that logs into our POS account and a connected receipt printer at the restaurant.

Is what I am trying to do even possible?

If the iPads are not on the same WiFi network, this isn’t possible. It’s more of a built in WiFi security issue than a Square limitation. It would be like you being able to print to your neighbors printer when sitting in your bedroom at home—a little freaky!

Now if if there was a way for the restaurant’s tablet you’re providing to be on your network either via a strong router or an extender, and it was logged into your account, then yes. This obviously means that they would not be able to use that tablet for their own restaurant, but could send drinks your way!

That is good to know. WIth KDS, would it be enough if the remote iPads stay in the VPN?

I am pleased to report this worked for me over a standard VPN.  This adds a piece of functionality that has been missing for a long time that others like Breadcrumb have had.  Previously to make this work, it required an  EoGre over IPSEC tunnel VPN, which was not easy to setup.  That allowed broadcast traffic to route over the VPN so square could see the remote printers.

Now a standard VPN without any special configuration will work.  I was able to test it to a printer over a VPN on a different subnet, and it worked right away.

Hopefully, this will be helpful to others where you need to print over VPN in those rare circumstances.

Here is the response from my network contractor. Am I putting my network at risk? Are there any secure methods to achieve this?

I can help with that as long as you understand that you are putting your devices directly on the internet and introducing a big security hole and I’m not sure it will keep working.

You would want this to be done over a VPN.  If your devices on both ends are connected through a VPN tunnel, there is no exposure you would have to be worried about.
