How can I reduce the price of an item only once

Hey everyone,

I’m coming from Shopify, which had a small difference in the checkout process that I can’t seem to find or replicate in Square.

I have a lot of items in my catalog. Let’s say someone wants to buy something that I’ve had for a long time, and the item is listed at $20. They offer me $13 and I’m willing to let it go for that price.

In Shopify, I could manually change the price of any item directly at checkout. I can’t seem to find a way to do that in Square I only see options to add a percentage discount or a fixed dollar discount.

I know I can go to More → Items → All items, select the item, and change its price there, but that’s not very practical since I would then have to go back and change the price again after the transaction.

Is there a way to manually override an item’s price at checkout in Square?

If not, how do you usually handle this kind of situation? Or am I the only one doing it this way?

Thank you very much,

Pascal

Hi @PascalB.. I have created an "open discount."  This allows me to enter exact dollar discounts on my POS as a one-time thing.  When you create the discount, it's Amount Type is set to "variable amount ($)."  You can just add that to the cart and specify -- to use your example -- $7 as the open discount.

Of course, the item is still recorded as being sold at the original price.  But this will allow you to maintain correct inventory.  You COULD add a custom $13 item to your transaction (using custom amounts), but that would NOT maintain correct inventory.

Finally, Square only allow item price overrides at checkout for items that are defined with the variable price feature.  But this requires that the price be blank when defined -- not exactly what you want.  If you want a "one-time price override" that doesn't require discounting as I specify above, you'll need to submit a feature request here, for consideration.
