What happens to my domain when I cancel my subscription?

I want to move to a different provider mainly because of the lack of afterpay (members have asked for it for literally 4 years with no update on progress at all)

I paid for a 1 year subscription and want to keep my domain name. 

When I cancel, what happens to my domain? Am I able to use it immediately after I cancel? or do I have to wait for a certain amount of time to pass before I can use it again?
