Trouble with discounts/coupons for upcoming sale

It is our shop anniversary this weekend, and we've put every item on sale at 15% off. I was able to create an automatic discount for this.

We *also* want to have a collection of items listed at 25% off, both in-person and online.

To use "discounts" for online purchases I have to individually click EVERY item included in the sale, or use the "include all items" button. This is not ideal, as our shop catalog includes over 5000 unique items. (It's a yarn shop).

I could create a discount for just the clearance items, but then the discounts stack, and I cannot see a place in settings to accept only the larger discount.

To have items get both a 10% and 15% discount stacked does not end up giving the full 25% off - as the first discount reduces the cost slightly, and customers feel cheated out of the few cents difference.

Does anyone have any creative ideas on how this could work both in-person and online?

Hi there, @nonaAWU

First off, congratulations on your shop anniversary!! That’s an exciting milestone, and we’re so glad Square is part of your celebration. Thank you for outlining your current setup and the challenge you're facing with managing multiple discount tiers across a large catalog, we completely understand how time-consuming and limiting this can be, especially with over 5,000 items in your inventory.

You're correct that currently:

  • Automatic discounts apply to all or specific items individually, and selecting items one by one is tedious at scale.

  • Stacked discounts can apply together if rules overlap, and unfortunately, there's no built-in setting at the moment to apply only the higher of two conflicting discounts.

We know how important it is to run layered promotions without unintended stacking or complicated setup, especially for retailers with large catalogs like yours. I’ve shared this use case and your feedback with our Product Team, as they’re actively working on ways to make promotions and discount logic more flexible for businesses like yours. You are also able to share your thoughts on our Square Ideate board.
