We are a community group within our church in Canada, which would typically be categorized as a not-for-profit (not sure how different that is than a non-profit).
Any money we bring in goes for our own purposes. We don't have any salaries we pay, we don't make a profit, we don't pay taxes, we don't issue tax receipts. I expect this would be similar to other community groups like Kiwanis clubs, Lions clubs, etc.
When setting up our Square account, I'm not sure how to answer the question "What type of business are you?". If I choose "Charities and Non-Profit" then it asks for a Federal Corporation Number, which we do not have.
Do we need to register for a business number? How do we do that as a not-for-profit in Canada?
Would this be at the federal or provincial level, or something else?
How much does it cost? Are there renewal costs as well?
