There are 3 readers for cell phones
Android version connects through headphone port, which newer phones no longer have.
Apple version connects through the lighting port
The above 2 are for swiping the magnetic black stripe.
The last version is a Bluetooth version which can connect to either type of cell phone with Bluetooth, and is meant to read Chip cards and Wifi Tap cards but can not read magnetic stripes. Hope this helps, knowing which phone you have could get you more answers as someone may have that same phone and be able to inform you what works with it.
