I am using Square Payroll for about 6 weeks now and it's great. I am using Square direct deposit so I have NOT written any checks with it @zilmoney . Being such, I can't properly answer your question.

Is there a reason you don't want to use the internal direct deposit?

Same situation as @SVLFever.. I don't use paper checks for anything anymore, if I can avoid it. And I've never had an employee who didn't want direct deposit.

Not everyone has stable banking access. Some people are unbanked/underbanked, between accounts, or use accounts that don’t accept ACH reliably (or have limits).
Setup delays happen. New hires might not have routing/account info on day 1, or the prenote/verification window means DD can’t start until next cycle.
Account changes + errors are real. If someone switches banks, mistypes a number, or closes an account, a check is the clean fallback so payroll isn’t blocked.
Certain pay types are easier as “one-off” payments. Final pay, bonuses, reimbursements, corrections, retro pay—some systems/HR flows still handle these via check depending on timing.
Legal/compliance edge cases. Some states have rules around final pay timing/methods; being able to cut a check same-day can keep you compliant.
Employee preference and trust. Some people simply like the “physical receipt,” want to cash immediately, or don’t want wages landing in a shared account.
