First I wouldn't buy it because it is running a 4 year old operating system, see this link as to why that's important. Also I don't see that device on the list, I See the MeMo 8 but not 7. It is 3-4 year old hardware already.

Per Square's website. "Your Android device must be running Android 4.4 or higher and have built-in Bluetooth Low Energy to work with the contactless and chip card reader." from https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5584-devices-compatible-with-square-contactless-and-chip-card-reader

Question about the chip reader. The website says that ASUS MeMO Pad 7 ME170C-8G-BK 7-Inch 8 GB Tablet would be compatible. Yet this tablet has "jellybean 4.3" operating system. Website says chip reader needs 4.4. I don't want to get this tablet if it is not really compatible.

@rainbowcheers, I can understand wanting to find an affordable device - definitely makes sense. You might be interested in this article that lists out various devices and their compatibility with Square. Let us know if you have other questions.

Thanks @VanKalkerFarms for the info. You're right that starting out with an older operating system is not ideal!
