is my old reader still good?

I have a reader from a business I used to own from several years ago. I've since opened another business and was wondering if I can use the same reader? (I've updated and validated all my buisness information in my Square account).

Or do I need to order a new reader?

Your old reader will work just fine but you may want to upgrade to the new contactless chip reader.
