Does Magstripe Reader Work With Chip Cards?

Hello,

Can I accept chip cards with the Magstripe reader? That is, does swiping a chip card using the Magstripe reader work or do I need to buy the Chip Card reader to accept chip cards?

Yes, you can use a chip card on a mag stripe reader. It will work but there is a change on the whole credit card industry you need to be aware of and judge your potential risk. Liability Shift.

TLDR; the weakest point of the credit card system is now liable for fraudulent charges. meaning if you bypass the security of the chip and take a stolen card you are the one eating the cost not the credit card companies. you may only deal with people you know so you may not be worried about it, but it's $49 vs possibly getting $100's of dollars charged back to you.

Did you get an answer. Can you manually enter the number on a chip card into the square even if it is not the chip card reader one.

Hi @leelinda1987 - Yes, you can manually key in any cards into the app. However, please be aware that doing so will have a higher processing fee. It may also make you liable for certain kinds of fraud which is why we recommend upgrading to the Contactless reader to accept chip cards.

You can just swipe the card, no need to enter it manually.

The only difference between the regular square reader and the chip one is, as I understand it, liability in case of fraud/problems,
