How do I hide a section

I have multiple sections on my store. Depending on timing, some items are available and some are not. There are times when no items in a particular section are available. I am 'hiding' the items but the section name still shows up in the store. I do not want to remove the section permanently. How can I 'hide' a section? Better yet, if not items in the section are available in the store why does it not automatically just hide itself?

At this time this is not a option, but that is a great suggestion.

My workaround for this is to create a new page called "Hidden Page" which isn't visible in navigation. You can then move sections to that page (which no one can see unless they know the URL).
