Loyalty Rewards - Specific Items (Unit Quantities)

We are a retail store that has been using punch cards for well over 10 years and have made the leap into testing out the Square Loyalty Program.

We sell by the gallon, and every five gallons gets a punch - and 10 punches equals 5 free gallons.

When setting up the loyalty program, I've got it to give 1 star per 1 gallon purchased. So to match our paper punch card - when they get 50 stars they can redeem for 5 free gallons.

When I have the rewards setup, how do I tell the system to reward 5 free gallons ? I added the specific item and it only deducts 1 gallon at time of redemption.

Will I have to create a dummy item to redeem the rewards? Which means I will have to know they are redeeming rewards when I ring them up and before I close the sale ?

Instead of redeeming a free item when they reach there 50 punches set it to Discount and item. Then set the discount at the price of 5 gallons.
