How Does customer apply coupon at check out?

Hello, so I am going to be running a Black Friday sale. My business is all online, and when you create items, there is an online check out link, and when the customer clicks on check out link that I did apply the discount to... nothing shows up and there isn't a price change that's shown and customers have to pay full price....

I created an auto apply discount, was that not the way to go??

I would love an answer soon as I am announcing the Black Friday Sale this week! Thanks!!

BTW here is the link for a product I put a TEST discount on at 99%..... Original price is $37.... so the price should be .37 cents with a 99% discount.... but it shows $37 at check out. Can anyone tell me why???
