thread Linking variation inventory? in Archived Discussions (Read Only)

I was wondering if there is a way to track 'bulk' inventory across multiple variations. Our situation is this: we sell crawfish by the pound, but have 3 different price points based on the amount purchased (eg. 1lb is $6, 3lb is $17, 5lb is $26). I can put inventory in for each variation, but cant find a way to track total amount available for any given night. I'm having to constantly go in and manually update the availability. It's becoming quite frustrating for our front of house staff and for our cooks. I can provide a screenshot if necessary. Thanks!

Hi @Gilmerbrewing - it sounds like you want to use price per unit and volume discounts instead of variations.

Step 1 - Set pricing per pound on the crawfish item like so:

Step 2 - Configure a volume discount.

There are plenty of ways you can set this up. In this case, I've set up a $1 discount if an order is placed for at least 3 pounds of crawfish.

I'd then create another discount for $4 off orders of 5lb or more.

If you ONLY sell crawfish in 1, 3 or 5 pound orders, this will create a bit of overhead for entering orders as staff will have to know to enter number of pounds as opposed to simply choosing a preset variation. That said, this does allow you to track crawfish inventory in terms of number of pounds available to sell any given night.

That makes sense, but will it work for our online store? 98% of our current business is order ahead and pick up because of the covid19 insanity. And yes, those are the only quantities we sell in. We have an outside chef that brought his own menu in.

Ah, good call out. Price per unit works on Square Online Store, but the discounts entered in dashboard only affect the POS.

Square Online Store doesn't yet have a concept of automatic discounts or volume discounts. So I don't think there's an available workaround to solve this particular inventory tracking issue.

I'll bring this feedback to the team. With more restaurants shifting to online ordering, this will become a bigger issue for more of our sellers as time goes on.
