Why are my customers not prompted to choose debit or credit?

Simply defaults to credit.

Sorry for the confusion. While Square accepts almost all forms of payment we process debit cards as credit. This is why the system defaults to debit only.

New and confused. If debit cards are processed as credit cards and they are not in the store does that mean that no pin number is required? The charge would be 3.5 % plus .30?

When it comes to processing fees, it about how the card information is capture instead of the card type. So if a card is manually added, then you would see the 3.5% +$0.30.
