Is there a way to charge and hold a deposit, that will get refunded when the empty item is returned? For example, we sell kegs of beer and require a deposit for the keg, which gets returned to the person when they return the keg in good working order.

Great question, @derekGCB!

Check out the answers in this thread on taking deposits from customers - there are a few different potential solutions there. Since you don't intend on keeping the money if the keg is returned in satisfactory condition, you could then refund the charge upon return of the keg.
