Converting Image URLs to images for Square

Our current store and online presence uses URLs to grab many pictures from our vendors to place on our current POS system and for our online store.

Right now, I see Square as requiring me to download each picture and then link that picture to the items I create one by one.

Additionally, I am unable to download that picture with the item if I do a bulk export because Square does not currently have the ability to tie the picture to the meta-data of an item.

Do I have this right, or is there a way to import or manually input urls to retrieve the images we use? And is there an updated spreadsheet for bulk import/exports of items that have image links?

It sounds like you have a solid understanding of the way in which it's currently possible to upload images, and the existing limitations. Your post is reminiscent of this feature request - does this sound like what you're looking to accomplish?
