How to put a limit on item selections during checkout

The item I am offering is a variety pack (5-7) I have figured out how to set the minimal requirement (5) but I would also like to set a maximum (7). Anything selected above the maximum I would like to apply additional cost at a discounted price than the original item price.

So far I have created the item(variety pack), created 2 variations( 5pk, 7pk), I added the options as modifiers (total 34)

I have the minimal selection requirement set at 5, and the maximum set at 7 in the customization tab. However when I go into preview mode it does not seem to apply the restrictions.
This is also the point where I want to be able to apply the additional cost if the customer wants more than 7 products in their pack?

Where can I make these changes on the platform, please ?

Hi @HBluprnt. Since you mentioned “Preview Mode” I’m assuming that this was a question for the Square Online board? If so, then it sounds like the problem is that you don’t have your modifier definitions completely set up. In this case, your POS doesn’t have these limitations, either. So…..

Before we go any further, can you please post your web site/store URL so I can take a look? Also tell me the item name in the store that you are having the problem with. I have modifier limits on all my items and they are working ok. I just need to see what you are seeing before I can help you.

@HBluprnt Thanks for that. I needed to see it in action next to your description of your issues so that I could give you proper feedback. Here goes.

First observation

In the same item, can not specify that for the variation 5-pack you want exactly 5 selections, and that for the variation 7-pack you want exactly 7 selections. So, out of the gate, you are going to have to have two items — Variety 5-Pack (with a min & max of 5) and Variety 7-Pack (with a min & max of 7).

Second

I’m betting that customers will want to often have multiples of one flavor. Currently you can’t do that either. I know of no workaround except for having 7-copies of your modifier lists and allowing one choice per slot in the package. That’s cumbersome.

Third

I ran into this problem with my ice cream shop. I allow customers to choose up to 3 mix-in flavors at no charge, and want a minimal charge after that. The only way I could do that was to duplicate my 88 item flavor list and make the flavors a charge in that one. I hated that so much that I decided that 3 flavors was the limit and don’t allow any more than that ever.

Fourth

If you are wanting to allow both fresh-brewed and fresh-pressed in the same variety pack, you are going to have to combine those all into one modifier list. For clarity, I would put “Brewed-“ and “Pressed-“ before each flavor so as to not confuse the customers. The point is you can’t have a limit of 5 (or 7) split between two modifier lists. Limits apply to only one modifier list.

Summary

Combine both modifier lists (brewed and pressed) into one list called “Flavors (Included)”. When you link that modifier list to 5-Pack, then you want a min and max of 5. When you link that modifier list to 7-pack, then you want a min and max of 7.
You’re going to have to resign yourself to only allowing one of each flavor in variety packs, unless you want to keep 7-copies of the same modifier list, called “Slot 1,” “Slot 2,” “Slot 3,” etc.
If you want to allow more than 5/7 choices, you are going to have to duplicate your Flavors list to “Flavors (Extra)” and then enter the upcharge for each flavor in that list. That will be an optional list, with no maximum needed. If that’s too much, then just don’t allow more than the maximum for the pack size online.

Sorry to be the bearer of less than good news here. I and others have asked for much more flexibility with modifiers, but so far what we have is what we have. What I wrote above is a lot to take in, I know. Try it out, ask questions,. Then make the changes and let me know. I’ll be more than happy to look at your shop again to be sure it is working as intended.
