Ive had a few customers try to use their pre-paid VISA gift cards and always declined. We know there is enough to cover the charge, the card is activated and the zip code is correct. We manually type in the card information (we do not have a swipe capability) and it's always declined. Its frustrating to me and my customers. not sure what the issue is. Can anyone help me ?

Hi Darcy! I can definitely understand the frustration, especially when the card shows enough available balance and everything appears correct.

One thing that stands out is that you’re manually entering the card information. Some prepaid Visa gift cards have restrictions on card-not-present or manually keyed transactions, even when the card is activated and has sufficient funds. In that situation, the issuer may decline the transaction rather than Square.

I’d have the customer check the number on the back of their prepaid card or the issuer’s website to confirm that the card allows manually entered/card-not-present purchases. It’s also worth checking the declined transaction in Square to see whether any additional decline information is provided.

Since you’ve had this happen with several different prepaid Visa cards, I’d also reach out to Square Support and have them look at one of the specific declined transactions. They may be able to tell you whether the decline is coming from the issuer or something with the way the transaction is being processed.

Curious if anyone else here who manually keys payments has successfully accepted prepaid Visa gift cards. That might help narrow down whether this is a common limitation. 😊

If you don't have the correct zip code, it may not work. Also, on another system we had, not square, we used to have to enter 20% less as the total because those cards will hold that amount as a gratuity. So if the card had $100, we would enter $80.00 and then authorize, and then enter $20 as cash, once payment completed add the $20.00 into the tip on the gift card.so now the $20 isn't missing, its just accounted for in your tips.. idk if that makes sense.
