Hello everyone! I want to redesign my website, but don't want to lose the design that I have. Is there a way to start a new design without using the editing tool for the existing site?

Great Question.

The easiest way to redesign your website without using your original design would be to add a site, that way you can create your design without tampering with the original site just in case you don't love your changes. But if you do, you're welcome to just move your domain over to the new account

Here are the steps for adding another site:

From your Square Online Overview page, select your account name in the upper right corner. Select Add site. Follow the prompts to name the new site and choose a location to sell from. Complete the setup steps to start building your new site.

Here's how you can move your domain if you love your new site:

From your Square Online Overview page, go to Website > Domains. Select Connect domain. Under Use a domain I own elsewhere, type in the domain name you want to transfer and select Verify. Select transfer your domain and follow the step-by-step instructions.

Hi I have the similar case as the original poster of this question.
I want to play around with redesigning my site, but I don't want to loose the existing one. Essentially I'm looking for a development site.

I have some additional questions.

1) creating a 2nd site, is there an additional cost for this ?
2) will it also require a new sub domain ? dev.mydomain.com instead of www.mydomain.com ?
3) will it have access to the inventory structure that is already there (so I can test it with actual inventory)
4) When I'm ready to swing it over to the new site ? do I just repoint the www.mydomain to the new site and delete the old one ?

Is there any possibility of negative results when doing this. I've had some issues in the past when making minor changes that had unintended impacts. I just don't want to impact my production/live site, and I wouldn't want to have to pay another annual fee just to get a development site .

You've raised some really great questions here, and I'd be happy to clarify the expected behavior and provide some further assurance. 🙂

I've answered your questions as follows:

1) It's free to create and manage multiple Square Online sites. Check out how to get started here!
2) Yes, you'll require a new domain for your second site. You can simply choose a free subdomain when setting this up, and then connect your custom domain at a later point. See "Assign Domains" in our guide.
3) When you create multiple Square Online sites, you can import fulfillment and catalog information from an existing site. Select this option if you want to replicate these details from your current site.

4) When you're ready to switch over, you can disconnect your domain from your first site and assign it to your new one.

Making changes to your business always carries some risk, but you have options to manage these by duplicating or setting up a second Square Online site to test new features. During this time, you can keep your current site running as normal, so orders won't be disrupted. I recommend that you make the "Preview" mode your best friend when setting up the new site, to ensure the site experience works as expected prior to making to making the switch.
