Google search console sitemap error

I've recently upgraded to Square online Plus Plan and connected my domain name to my site.

I added the property to google search console and verified it OK. But when I try to submit the sitemap.xml I get an error message saying "Please enter a valid path to a sitemap in your site."

I've tried several times with "sitemap.xml" and variations but still get the same result.

I've since noticed that there is a change of address option on my square.site property. should I have done that instead?

Unfortunately, we don't offer support for sitemapping here and any errors you're encountering with the sitemap.xml submission will need to be addressed with Google.

Their support centre may be able to offer some insights here.
