Sub and Superscript

I'm trying to superscript some numbers within the body of text (referencing). I'm inserting <sup>1,2</sup> but the formatting just disappears after a few seconds.

I have to say I'm a complete novice, so not sure what I'm doing wrong.

This is what I'm doing.

Highlighting text

(right click)Inspect element

(right click) Edit HTML

Inserting code

Initially numbers turn to Superscript but quickly revert.

I was having the same problem with Italics in the picture captions, but discovered you put the code into the actual caption box.

Using this method above I've been able to bold etc etc (just to test)

Sorry I realise this is probably me being stupid.

Any help would be appreciated.
