The short answer is yes - but only if you're signing up to Square as an Individual or Sole Trader. For all other registered business types, you'll need to provide an ABN.

How does this work for a non-profit incorporated association? The ATO doesn't require us to have an ABN unless we're turning over $150k/year and need to register for GST. We don't turnover even 10% of that and registering for an ABN creates a huge amount of paperwork and annual compliance burden. Our association registration can be easily verified on the state government associations portal.
