The way to tell would be to look at the power connector and determine if the plug is Apple's lightning bolt connector or a for newer iPads, a USB-C connector.

USB-C Version

10.2” iPad (2020, 2019)
10.5” iPad Air (2019)
iPad Pro 10.5”

Lightning Bolt Version:

9.7" iPad (2017, 2018)
iPad Pro 9.7"
iPad Air (1, 2)
