Featured items custom selection

I'm trying to choose a custom selection for featured items on my website.

Original problem: the 'choose items' button is blue, but doesn't open my item library.

Solutions I've tried:

- selected 'most popular' instead, it says "Looks like you don't have any items in your store. Create an item to sell on your Shop page" but it DOES populate the page with items from my library, so they're obviously there. It's showing items I don't want, so this isn't the fix I need.

- created items both from the website editor and from the library. Didn't make a difference where I created it, so that's a nope.

- tried categorising the items to isolate the ones I want from everything else. Nope.

- worked through the online guide to make sure visibility, stock etc are all following recommendations. Still nope.

- played with all the different types of product (event, physical, digital, other etc) and delivery/pickup options. You guessed it: nope.

- yes, yes, I turned it off and on again. Cleared cache, tried a different browser, even a different device. Waited 24 hours, used the item sync, waited another 24 hours....surprise, surprise: nope.

- trawled the seller community, found one relevant US post. The very first step of 'using the blue choose item button' is what's broken and there's no workaround.

I know I have items in my library and they are being displayed on the website. It's the website editor that isn't detecting them which means I can't control them. Any ideas?
