thread How do I apply a variable dollar amount discount to a line item on an invoice? in Payments Troubleshooting

This is extremely frustrating. I often agree to a lower price on my furniture that are not percentage based discounts. For example, I lower the price of a sofa from $600 to $500. But if I need to invoice the customer, there is no way to apply a discount to that specific item. Applying the total of all discounts on the order level is a disaster because:

a) it makes it unclear what amount the customer is paying for each item

b) makes it impossible to know what to refund, in case an item is returned

c) order level discounts spread proportionally to each line item, and to items which I do NOT want a discount applied, such as delivery fees which are not taxed.

This is a major problem for me (major as in, I will need to find another POS service), as I need to have accurate invoices sent to my customers with line-item discounts. Are there really no work arounds to add a line-item discount to an invoice?? How is it that Square did not think to program its POS with this basic ability?

Hi @bestinshowroom, thank you for reaching out!

I went ahead and checked with our Invoices team and they said that unfortunately at this time that this is a known limitation within our system. They do not have a workaround at this time, but I sent your feedback over to that corresponding team.

Please let me know if you have any other questions in the meantime.
