      <description>&lt;P&gt;Hey!&amp;nbsp;Thanks for reaching out and, yes, depending on the reader, you will either need to plug it in or pair it to your phone.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;

&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;

&lt;P&gt;To update the firmware on your Square Reader for Contactless and Chip:&lt;/P&gt;

&lt;OL&gt;
 &lt;LI&gt;Open the Square app on your device.&lt;/LI&gt;
 &lt;LI&gt;&lt;A href="https://squareup.com/help/article/5639#connect-the-contactless-and-chip-reader" target="_blank"&gt;Pair the reader to your device&lt;/A&gt;. &lt;EM&gt;If this is a reader you plug in, just simply plug it in.&lt;/EM&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/LI&gt;
 &lt;LI&gt;The firmware update will begin automatically.&amp;nbsp;&lt;STRONG&gt;Keep in mind&lt;/STRONG&gt;, you won’t be able to take payments while the reader is updating.&lt;/LI&gt;
&lt;/OL&gt;

&lt;P&gt;This process usually takes 5-10 minutes. Once finished, you can continue accepting payments as usual.&lt;/P&gt;

      <description>&lt;P&gt;How can I tell if the firmware was updated. When I paired both readers, I have a wireless reader also, I saw no indicator regarding an update&lt;/P&gt;

&lt;P&gt;You can manually reset your reader by following these steps:&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;OL&gt;
 &lt;LI&gt;Hold the button on the bottom of the reader for 15 seconds.&lt;/LI&gt;
 &lt;LI&gt;When you see 4 red lights, release the button. Keep in mind the lights will flash orange first- keep holding until they're red.&lt;/LI&gt;
 &lt;LI&gt;Tap on the button one time to get green lights.&lt;/LI&gt;
&lt;/OL&gt;
&lt;P&gt;Once you've reset the reader, pair it to your phone again. Any outstanding updates will be pushed through then. Please let us know how you go!&lt;/P&gt;
