thread Make all food non-taxable? in Payments Troubleshooting

There must be an easy shortcut for this, but I’m not finding it. I’d like all items in my “Food” category to be non-taxable. Right now, I have to manually remove the sales tax at checkout from any item that looks like food. Surely there’s a better way. Please ridicule me.

Hi @RoadHazard. No ridicule here. This is one of the least intuitive things I’ve ever seen, and I’m 62 years old! LOL. What I’m going to give you is a work-around. Here’s what you do:

Go into your dashboard Sales Tax settings. Choose the tax in question and edit it. Go down to the “Exempt tax” section and toggle on “Add exemption rule.”

Give the exemption rule a name and choose applicable location(s).

Then select the option that says “If item price is below amount”

Key in a ridiculously high item amount, like $100,000.00

Now, in the Items, click the blue text “No items.”

This brings up the Select Items window. If you look at the line above the header, you’ll see a line that says “Categories.” Click on the blue “>” to expand that. Select the category you want to exempt and then press Done.

Save it and that’s it. You should now automatically see tax exempt sales for those items. Note that you might need to close all POS and restart them to force this change to load immediately.

Why is it this hard? I wish I knew, but at least my work-around works. I hope that does what you want it to do.
