'Donation' Item Type missing when I try to add an Item

I'm trying to set up a variable amount donation to my online store, but "Donation" is not in my list of Item types. I can't figure out how to get my store to allow for variable amounts.

What options do you have available to choose from? Do you see the option of "Other?" Feel free to submit a screenshot, if you would like.

Please let me know what you see on your side and I can look into this further.

Was there an answer to this? I am having the same issue when trying to set up a donation item. It only gives Prepared food, physical, digital and other. When I select other, I still have to put in a price and there isn't an option for the donor to enter a custom amount.

Hi @a_neil, welcome to the Square Community!

I went ahead and checked in on this with our eCommerce team and they said that the "Donation Item Type" not being available is working as intended. We are currently working on a new streamlined item creation function in the future. So if you were not using the event or donation item types previously, then they were removed.

Our eCommerce team did say that if you are looking to use that Donation Type now, then feel free to let me know and I can send over a manual request for our eCommerce team to get the "Donation Item Type" option back for you. The only stipulation with this option is that if you choose to do this, then you will not be a part of the updated item experience.

In short, if you would like to be part of the updated item experience then you will need to leave things as is, and as a workaround in the meantime, you could create a donation payment link. If not though, you do have the manual route.

I would also like to be able to add a variable donation item to my items library. I host events at a location where internet is hard to access. Being able to secure donations via SquareUp offline is the main reason I have been this app for so many years. The new way to accept donations, via a link, is only accessible when internet is available.

Hi @cubscoutdad, thank you for reaching out!

In order for us to get this started for you, our eCommerce team did want me to let you know that if they manually update your donation item types, you will not be included in the newest item library update (that is releasing soon). If you would like to proceed with this, there is a separate process in which you will need to contact our Customer Support teams to get that started.

They said that if you are not wanting to fully go through with that though, they do have a workaround of creating a donation payment link which you can embed on your site, or even link a picture/text/button to the payment link.

Please let me know how you would like to proceed, and we can go from there!

Is there a time associated with "soon" for the release of the new item create update?

When the new update is released, will the donate type be back?

We do not have an exact timeline on this, unfortunately. I checked in our eCommerce team and said that this function is being slowing released to Sellers at this point.

They said if you are still interested you are still able to opt-out of this function, but it may cause issues down the road. They just wanted to be fully transparent. Let me know what you decide and we can go from there.

Would you be interested in opting out of the new item experience? The new experience is slowing being rolled out now. As I have gone over with others in this thread and for full transparency, it may cause potential issues down the road, but you are still welcome to opt-out at this time.

Please let me know if you would like to opt-out.
