Tap to pay iPhone works for some cards only

Hi. For as long as I can remember tap to pay on my iPhone doesn’t work for SOME cards. I then resort to taking out the square hardware and the same card will tap on that just fine. Metal cards never work for tap to pay on iphone. My phone is up to date on everything. i have been waiting for some time for square to help resolve this issue but to no avail. Anyone else have thoughts on this? Thanks!

You know, I never really connected the metal cards to problems with TTP on my iPhone, but now that I think about it I agree that I've seen more issues with those type of cards! Huh!!

The challenge here is that this wouldn't specifically be a Square issue. TTP is run via the NFC chip in the iPhone, which is something Apple controls. I'd hope that there is communication between Square's dev team and the iPhone hardware team to get to the bottom of this! At this point I think that's about the best we can do. 😞

I wanted to step in to thank @ryanwanner for his contribution here.

Absolutely right on chip used for Tap-to-pay is Apple's, while your Reader has a chip from Square.

I'll mention removing cases can also help with this.

Here you can find a few troubleshooting steps, but unfortunately, if the chip in your phone is not picking up certain cards, there is no solution we can provide on our end. It might be worth checking with Apple to see if they have any suggestions or if replacing the chip is an option.

If you believe that this might be a software issue, we'll be more than happy to look into it.
