Limited Material Custom Orders

I am making both items for inventory (known amount by variation) as well as custom made items.

For custom orders I can make a limited number altogether but not limited by variation.

For example, I can make small, med, large with different configurations but can only make e.g. 10 in total (in some cases, only 1!) so I want to set the total inventory for the parent item not per variation or option.

Is there a way to do this?

Have you considered using item modifiers? With item modifiers you can have a single item with inventory tracking, then let customers use the modifiers to choose customization options. I'm not sure if you are selling online or not, but you can also set up item modifiers for Square Online.
