Inventory management with drop shipments

We sell the vast majority of our inventory in store, though occasionally will drop ship an item from a supplier if we are out of stock in store. Right now we create a purchase order for the item, "receive it" immediately, and charge the customer all at the same time. Curious how others do inventory management for drop shipping, if there is a process they have found that works well?
