Sku is too long or not "alpha numeric" for creating labels?

I'm trying to create labels and running into a frustrating problem. I keep getting errors that the SKU is either too long, or can only be alphanumeric characters.

For example, here's one of the errors I'm getting. "The SKU for Healing Heart Earrings, default, HRT-E1 must be limited to alphanumeric characters."

I have a bunch of items that have the dash in the SKU and are working fine. I also can't find any info about what is too long. 10 digits? 12?

Would appreciate any help.
