Reporting category - appears to conflict with Category on bulk import/update

I noticed Reporting Category is a new field.

I updated "Category" column in the inventory export file then imported it to update all my items. Now all my items belong to BOTH old and new category (2 categories selected) and the new category value was set as value for "Reporting Category" which I hadn't seen until now, and there is no column in inventory export file for it.

How do I update Category and Reporting Category separately?

Is there any history of adding Reporting Category or allowing an item to belong to more than 1 Category? We have discounts setup based on category and never anticipated an item in more than 1. I know this changed in the last 6 months.
