is anyone out there using square for both restaurant and retail?

We are a small grocery and kitchen, using shopkeep and considering switching to square as the ecommerce options with Shopkeep aren't working well for us. We assume we would use both the restaurant side of square and the retail. Is there anyone out there who like us uses both? Looking for advice.

Hi @lmstore and welcome to the Seller Community!! The ability to have both the Square for Retail subscription and the Square Restaurants subscription on the same account is a feaure request we are tracking at the moment. The only way to have both would be to have two separate Square accounts as the Dashboards change for each subscription.

I'm happy to help brainstorm with you on the best solution/subscriptions for your business though. Please let me know what your thoughts are or if you have any questions. Thank you!

Thank you Ashley, to understand-- we'd have to have two separate transactions? or is there a way for one system to run both? we have a fairly small retail side and a small to-order food side. could we run the retail items from the restaurant side?

You cannot have both systems on one account. You would have to choose which system would best fit both of your needs. What features appeal to you from the Restaurants subscription and which ones appeal to you from the Retail subscription?

Hi Ashley - I'm in a similar situation. With the Covid 19 pandemic I have closed one location and consolidated my remaining location into a takeout centric restaurant menu, added a coffee bar and baked goods and a grocery component. In my closed restaurant we used Square for Restaurants. At my current location we are still just using the basic square system. I'm looking to upgrade to either Retail or Restaurants for this location but I'm looking for some guidance as to what would work best. I'm sure you've talked to a lot of others in similar situations and am looking for any insights you can share. Thanks in advance.

Is this still true? I am opening a cafe and market and if I am understanding you correctly, I would need to have 2 different apps one for ordering food and one for retail?! what about if someone is doing both things? then I am ringing them out twice? I know my customers won't like that.

We use both the restaurant app and the basic app on the same account and they combine together. (Not the retail app)

I also don’t see why you couldn’t just create retail items in the restaurant app. We do for our hats and shirts etc.

We sell some retails items in our restaurant using square for restaurants.

We use categories and menu layouts to make them easy to find. I guess it just depends on the size of your inventory.

We also create a 'table' that represents our retail points. With the combination of the table labels, the categories, menus we can easily separate out the retail sales in reporting.

We also have the same challenge. We are a country grocery store with coffee and food to order. Due to the number of SKUs that we have to track we use the retail system and have added the coffee and food items as selections under their respective categories. It would be great if Square could allow features from both in a single app.

Is there a way for a location running Square for Restaurants to sell some grab and go items which are sold by weight and use a scale or does the scale only work exclusively with Square for Retail?

At this time, scales are only compatible with Square Point of Sale and Square for Retail. We’d love it if you'd submit this request on our Ideate page for Square for Restaurants. Our team monitors these boards and we triage them to measure needs. You can search the boards to see if this has been requested before and add your use case if so!
