View items as collapsed instead of expanded

We current use the item menu as

Item- Dewalt Tools

Variation- Screw Driver

Variation-Hammer

Ect.

When we do a search for tools, to bring up the list, we get the expanded view of tools. We have 100 different items for tools, Dewalt tools, Makita tools, Miwaukee tools, ect. With each one expanded showing each tool in each item, it takes quite a time to load and also to look through the expanded view when all I am looking for is the item title, not the variations. Is there a way to set a preference to collapse the view for the items only and then click on the one I want to expand. I can collapse them separately but when I exit and come back they are expanded again.

I am sure this can be a thing, just simple code.

guess I should say we have over 100,000 SKUs so this can be tedious.
