Hey everyone 🌟

Running a business is hard enough without adding the complexity (and headache) of filing taxes each year. Although it can be a daunting task, the right preparation can help you breeze through it.

Which is why we’d love to know:

What are your best practices for tax preparation?

Whether it’s how to organize all your records or self-care tips to get you through it all, I can’t wait to read everyone’s reply!

P.S: For our US folks 🇺🇸, don’t miss our AMA with Aja Evans Counseling — it’s a great opportunity to share any questions or anxieties you have around your business tax journey. Ask your question here!

According to 2022 taxes, I was responsible for x% in taxes on my Owners Draw. In 2023, I added up how much in Owners Draw I was responsible for every quarter, multiplied it by x% and payed that. I have a tax account that is replenished by Square Savings with every transaction so I don't have to "come up" with the money when it is due.

Someone is always late to the party, and this time it is me! LOL. Honestly, the posts already made on this subject are all spot-on. I’ll reinforce a few things that make me actually look forward to tax time, if that’s possible.

First, either invest in a great bookkeeper/accountant, or invest in stellar accounting software (ie - NOT QUICKBOOKS!). Make time every day to keep the books up-to-date (I do that every morning for a few hours before I open the shop). Don’t procrastinate the daily routine without a spectacularly great reason, and then try not to procrastinate it anyway. Ha. At the end of the year, tax preparation for me is nothing more than printing some reports that I import into a spreadsheet that organizes everything for entry into my tax preparation software. Currently, I use Zoho Books which I have found to be hands-down the best small business accounting package on the market. But, I love most all things Zoho, so there’s that.

Second, even if you are (like me) using tax preparation software (we use TurboTax for Business for our 1065s), budget enough money each year to have an accountant/CPA review the returns. I know bookkeeping and taxes. In my former life as a software engineer I developed more than a few such systems for large corporations. But taxes are complicated and software can’t possibly think of what I forgot to do. That’s where money spent on expert eyes is worth it. We are lucky to have the same CPA we’ve had for over a decade now for our personal returns. He reviews the 1065 returns I create (three of them) to be sure that I’ve crossed all my “T”s and dotted all my “I”s.
