Hello We have been looking at migrating to Square. One of the things we will miss from our current system is having a barcode scanner built into the portable payment unit.

It seems that Square Terminal will only support devices like barcode scanners and cash drawers whilst it is plugged into the hub unit.

Is this true? as it rather defeats the point of having a portable device like Square Terminal.

When I was reading the details originally I presumed that the hub would connect to the Square Terminal via bluetooth or something, not just by cable. Is there any way of wirelessly connecting accessories?

Hi @cidermaid, thank you for reaching out!

At the moment, the Square Terminal can only support USB bar code scanner. There isn't a way the bar code scanner or cash drawer wirelessly I'm afraid.

I'll be sure to pass your suggestion to our Product team for future updates!

@cidermaid barcode scanner - yes pain in the bum! Would be nice to have a wireless option but in most use cases I can think of the scanners are used in mainly static locations?

Regarding cash draws - you can have the wireless options, as 99% of cash draws are powered by a printer. So if you have a receipt printer connected to the same network (even if you’re not using it for the receipts) then you just connect the draw to that.

Star do make a wifi ‘air draw’ converter, but this is £££
