I have been looking at the Square system practically all day and I do like what I see. One exception is the KDS and it's use from an Ipad. I imagine that the screen on an Ipad is to small to function effectively in a busy kitchen. I would expect to have a screen of at least 24" sitting on the wall for the chefs to use.

Have I got it right... is it that the KDS can only be used on small IPAD screens?

You could always run the iPad to a larger screen but not being a user of such a product I may not be the best help here.

Hey @Yvett - as Matt says you could link the iPad up to a large screen, but the interaction would still need to be on the iPad.

It's designed in a very interactive way - so think of it more for a chef, rather than chefs. You can have more than one screen & they all sync up - so if you have multiple stations then maybe an iPad at each?

You've essentially got two types of systems, the 'traditional' hardware setups (like oracle, LS etc) where you've got the custom built hardware & then the software that runs on it that is either rented/leased or bought outright. Then there is the software only options (like Squares KDS & some of the others) that's designed to be used on standard hardware in the general market. This means that the entry and ongoing costs are often a lot lower & leaves the end user with more options, although this might be different to the hardware players.

Not sure if I've made any sense & it's been a long day - but in short Square is (in main) BYOD & lets you experiment & see what you can get out of it. But this means 'off the shelf' in many cases.
