I have a person calling my business line identifying herself as "Tammy with Merchant Services, "I am corporate mam". I asked her for my business email, she stated she did not have it. She wants to discuss my OVERAGE on my merchant account....I told her I have not received any email nor USPS mail regarding this. She stated it would be on my merchant services statement?????? I did a reverse look up on the phone number from this caller and it is not registered to a Tammy or any corporate number. The person the number is registered is a female individual. I have NEVER received a call like this since being with SQUARE in 2014! I presume it is spam! I hung up because I had a crying infant. She called back with a different number and left a voicemail. Is this a fraud call. Should I be concerned? I am not aware of any merchant services statement.....Please advise

EVERY caller who identifies themselves as being from Merchant Services is spam. Period. Any caller who legitimately does business with you, would identify themselves as that company. And, like Chip said, Square will never call you or behave that way, neither will your other companies.

There are MANY types of business spammers out there. Quick Books is another big one. My rule of thumb is, if I didn't leave a message for someone at a specific company to call me, then it's spam. None of the companies that I do business with will randomly call me to tell me there's a problem or solicit to me. If I have a problem with an account, they're going to notify me in my account or by email and even then, I still verify that the email is legit. I don't click on links in the email. I go to my account and sign in and check for the problem myself.

When I get these crazy calls I just simply hang up. Also, one important thing that few people think about... If you get an American, speaking regular English, and they're trying to solicit or spam you, but you have already responded to them, remember to say things like "I'm not interested" or "No, I will not". They record conversations and if you use the words "yes" or "thank you", they can edit the recording to say you gave permission. I get a lot of people that call me and talk like customers to get a response from me, then tell me they're looking for the owner or manager or who they are with. Because I've already spoken, I'm in danger of not protecting myself if I just simply hang up. So, I always respond with "I'm not interested in whatever you're selling" and then hang up. They will act like we're in conversation and they know who I am. It's a dead giveaway. Be really careful that when someone calls you and speaks your name, that you don't say "yes". Rather say, "how can I help you?".

Hope this helps!
