Hello,

is this your first POS system? if it let us know there are lots of tips that can help you from the think tank.

make sure your sales tax rate is setup

build your inventory separate physical items from service items (in our state service items are currently tax exempt)

(You can either do this from a previous system put it into a spreadsheet and have square do it (make sure to purge all the items that are junk, not needed or straight up bad) or you can do input the spreadsheet) You will also have to create categories for these items and assign them and configure inventory management

you may at this time choose to setup discounts - employee, damaged merch etc

return policy warranty policy

linking social media to it and websites

set up your payment types cash , store credit, house accounts etc

set up your employees and their permissions

if you have a customer data base you may import that in (purge and clean first)

Test Transactions square does not have a training module we have asked, make sure you are a customer you will be the guinea pig you might want two guinea pig customers (i have two emails in my system for me) you will also have to refund or cancel these test transactions

Before opening:

Cash sale
Credit card sale
Refund
Exchange
Discount
Tax calculation
Split payment
Gift card
Receipt printing
Email receipt

Train Employees once again you will need to refund any cash or check transactions that you create for training

Practice common tasks:

Ringing up items
Looking up customers
Applying discounts
Processing returns
Selling gift cards
Counting the cash drawer
Opening and closing the register

as far as online bookings and appointments I am not as versed. Hopefully someone from our think tank will chime in on that @JessPoynter @Sammie_C

Items I use

I use the time tracking but not payroll

I love the invoicing and the contracts ( i have asked for some feature requests that could make it even more enjoyable)

I use the online square commerce site. very easy to manage and that is where your online bookings and appointments might come in handy for you.

Daily reports are fabulous because we enter them into our accounting software. fairly clean but we do print supporting documentation for the day for some transactions.

The overview on the dashboard and the dashboard reports are great for snapshots of business health.

you get a lot in this "little, friendly system"

Welcome! We have used Square for three years now and love it. It's not a perfect system but it meets our needs and is simpler to use than other tools we have tried in the past. I primarily use appointments, billing, and employee scheduling and payroll.
