@lennys26 Short answer: no, there's no supported way to do any of that.

Register is built as a locked-down POS appliance, not an open Android device. Square describes it as dedicated hardware with embedded point-of-sale software and secure payments tech, all built by Square — and they note it's "extra secure without any additional apps or web access to worry about." That's the point of the device: no app installs, no browser, no OS tweaks.

You would have to root the device, which I think would be hard to do since Square registers aren’t sold in the masses as Android phones. Even if you could root it, you would need to know the chip set and if an Android os version would even run on it. We don’t know if Square has a kill switch to completely disable the register if tampered with. Square Terminal has one.

I would suggest keeping it as a backup or donate it to a non profit for them to use as a register. We donated our version 1 Square stands when we upgraded years ago.

I have an old version 1 register that I’m not using and I would like to repurpose it. Has anyone has done the same or have any information on reloading the device with stock android, sideloading apps, or getting ADB access.

I would be fine with just gaining access to a web browser. I don’t really need full root/OS level access.

Thanks.
