I'm interested in getting the handheld device. What field does the scanner use for barcodes? I normally use the SKU and convert that unique number to a barcode using Avery (labels) website.

Also, does the software mimic Square for Retail and record cash sales?

Hi @mspreema, thank you for reaching out here on the Square Community! These are great questions, and I am happy to hear you are interested in the Square Handheld.

The Square Handheld uses either the SKU or the GTIN fields. Which should pair the same with using Avery labels.

In regard to using the Square Handheld to take cash payments, yes, the Square Handheld tracks cash payment sales just like our other POS systems.

So it looks like the Square Handheld does read GTIN-14's, but does not seem to be able to read GTIN-128s, at this time.

Can you get the handheld device, or do you need a package with a counter POS as well?

You are welcome to purchase just the device. No other devices are needed for it to work.
