thread receipt tape waste in Hardware Setup & Troubleshooting

I can't be the only one having this issue. I have purchased 2 different brands of receipt tape, one specifically for Square, and still end up with a significant portion of unused tape. The receipts just stop printing and goes into error. Short of tape rolls together, I it costly to buy tape and not have the entire roll used as does a thermal printer. Is there a setting that can be changed to indicate the roll size? or something else I'm missing? Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful.

@VVNobHill ;

You are not stating which Thermal Printers you bought and which one your currently having issues with. The problem your having I have not run into with my Star printer that I bought from Square. When the roll gets Low, a red Flashing LED comes on warning we are getting low. Finally a receipt either does not print or partially prints and just stops. When we look at the receipt printer we may have 1 to 2 inches of thermal paper left but nothing more. Is your thermal receipt printer compatable with Square or on its list of approved hardware? A packaging place down the road was having a similar issue with a Label printer. The label printer would say its out and stop printing labels. My amazon shipping label termal printer prints every last label. He even gave me his rolls that he could not use and asked me to see if they worked for me. I ran them all the way to the end. Only thing I can think of is your thermal printer and his measure the thickness of the roll of labels / paper and says its out. Mine are set to have look if there is paper right be fore the thermal element and not measure the thickness of a label roll or receipt roll. You may have to contact your thermal printer manufacturer to see about these settings and how to set them..... if they can be adjusted. My older thermal receipt printers wasted alot of paper like what your saying, I just got new ones as I had no idea how old they were.
