Square is charging $35 tax on my $20 book, how do I fix it???

You must have multiple taxes made and they are all turned on on your items because there is no way to create a greater than 100% sales tax, but you could have a 90% and an 85% tax turned on, which would total 175% and be the exact amount you are currently seeing. I would guess when you were entering the tax rate you put in 90 instead of 9.0 or just 9. So go to the above link and see what you have entered for tax rates.

Thank you for responding, but there are no manual tax rates set in my online store... it's set up up so the system "auto calculates" the taxes

I didn't know it was online sales. So there is a Sales tax area in the online store where you can set up Sales tax. I don't see how I can link it but from your regular Square dashboard here, https://squareup.com/dashboard/, click online, click shared settings, and click sales taxed. See if you see anything there.
